What action(s) might you take in order to prepare for online and blended learning?
- Relationship with student: I believe in the power it can bring to classroom when a teacher you have a trustworthy relationship with your students. Therefore, it is great to know that I will start this school year with student in classroom. Therefore, I would like to use the face to face time to create the relationship with the students.
- Set up norms: In the online teaching environment, it is more challenging in term of classroom management. Therefore, I would like to establish the class norms with students in the beginning of the year and reinforce them when needed. If online learning happens again, I will review the norms with students and ensure a learning friendly environment for students.
- Clear goals: In online learning students may left behind because they are not clear about the goals of each lesson or each unit. Therefore, I will clearly state each lesson’s goal with students so they know what I required from them and where they will be. Per school requirement, I will share this with students each cycle.
Considering your previous experience with online learning, what are your instructional strengths & areas for growth?
I hold Zoom meetings with students almost every lesson as scheduled in school. Break out rooms are used a lot by me and my students and myself really enjoyed using this function. This function gives students opportunity for collaboration, at the same time gives the teacher an opportunity to supervise the discussion without students preparing for it. Another growth of myself is providing timely feedbacks for students. I do not let the students wait more than one hour normally to give them feedbacks. There was also a lot of one-one meetings during online learning to give students feedbacks and answering their questions. After any assessment, I will stay after Zoom meeting to explain to the students of my comments if they don’t quite understand. Last but not least to mention is the ability of using technology, I learned how to record lessons and using voice recording function in PowerPoint. Quizlet was also applied a lot in my CAL lessons. I am planning to use Menti in this school year.
Using the 5Cs of online learning, what goals might you set for yourself in anticipation of future online instruction?
I would like to work on Clarify in this year. Because this year school sets a very clear requirement that we need to post a cycle plan in DX therefor I need to plan ahead for my students. Ensure that students are clear of my expectations will facilitate the students for a better academic achievement. I will discuss the unit objective with my students and ensure every student understand the objectives. Before each assessment, I will check students understanding of the criteria again. Rather than clarifying the learning objectives, I will clearly define the expectations for behavior in the online environment or the classroom environment.
How might you achieve these goals? Who might you reach out to for support?
I will collaborate within my team to ensure I have a clear and same understanding of the objectives of each unit. If there is question, I may also seek help from my CAL or Director of Chinese who are always so helpful. I will review the PD documents about COLO to reinforce my understanding. Rather than that, I will also check with students to see if they understand the learning objectives and assessment criteria well.
If you had a magic wand, what might the 5Cs of online learning look like in your classroom?
Students follow direction and motivated in learning. They attend class with preparation and they truly participated in class. Students also collaborate in their group and everyone contributes with a respectful manner. As a teacher, I clearly state the learning objectives and assessment criteria. Therefore, students know where they are going. At this crisis time, I would like to fully support my student’s emotional stability, they can ask for my help any time they needed. Students are being effective and efficient learner and achieve that best potential as learner at the same time being happy and take care of their well-being.
